Gate Technology Ltd, the Malta-based entity of crypto exchange Gate, has obtained a Payment Institution license under the EU’s PSD2 framework from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). This regulatory milestone positions Gate among the few crypto-native firms in Europe to achieve such approval, reinforcing its strategy to merge traditional finance with Web3 infrastructure.

CEO Giovanni Cunti emphasized the license’s significance: 'This isn’t just compliance—it’s a bridge. We’re building payment solutions that meet MiCA standards while serving both institutional and retail clients across Europe.' The achievement follows Gate’s earlier acquisition of a full MiCA license for exchange and custody services in Malta.

The MOVE signals growing regulatory clarity for stablecoins and crypto payments in the EU, with Gate now poised to compete with legacy payment processors. Market observers note the timing aligns with rising institutional demand for compliant on-ramps into digital assets.
